I feel that surgery is not always in the best interest of patients and morally I do not advocate surgery as a shortcut to disease prevention.

So what are you going to do?

Ans. Right now I am working as a casual employee in the emergency department of the hospital I have worked with for the past 2 years. Casual means that I can choose the days and hours I want to work versus having someone schedule them for me. This is allowing me the flexibility to start my own business and spend time with my son, Isaiah.

What is your import business about?

Ans. I have decided that because there is a shortage here in the western world in regard to elegant, modest clothing that I would import them from the source, the far east. My first country is India (big surprise!) My products right now are salwar kameez (pant suits) sarees (pictured) and eventually Bollywood items. I love world culture and what better way to make a living than to bring the best here to the west? Once I get situated I will begin adding other countries to my international trade.

Where can I buy your products?

Ans. I know your anxious, so am I. I am so excited about my products and I'm sure that sisters whether Afrocentric, Indicentric, Cultur-centric, hippies, muslimahs and divas everywhere will desire to have something as beautiful as the things I buy. I am currently working with programmers and wholesalers to establish my line and also build my own site www.meccaeast.com I will keep you update on the events and when my go-live day will be. Prior to that date, I will be auctioning my products on eBay.

What else have you been up to?

Ans. I've been busy running after Isaiah! He is surely full of energy and vibrance, and I love to be in his presence. I have been spending all of my days with him and even though I turned down a high paying job, I feel that I am being paid in treasures being with him. He is insightful and caring, he reminds me to remain noble and modest. I have been so happy as of late, more so than I've been in a long time and I know it's because he and I have the ability to hang out so much.

Today I want to dedicate my thoughts to Isaiah or also known to many as I-Victory. He is quite precious to myself and his father C'BS Alife Allah. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't find myself admiring his positive attitude towards life. He is never tired, always smiling, always talking about things going on in the world and is very caring about others. Life has a way of showing you why you are alive and I know that Isaiah is the reason why I'm here. Sometimes, we'll take a trip to the supermarket and he'll talk to other children and adults asking what they are buying and what they are going to make for dinner, he never has an issue making friends whereever he goes.

Recently, we took a train ride to my mother's home and I couldn't even stand how he spoke to almost everyone telling how he was going to visit "Gramma" and have fun, swim in her pool, watch "Noggin" and help her cook. Sunny is the best word to descrive him. Fun, active, intelligent, abstract and sociable are all words which can begin to tell his story. Prior to him being born I remember his kicking with VIGOR! I would be walking and a foot to the lung would ensue. Numerous somersaults and the occasional midnight hiccups. I should have known what I was in for. He has always been unique and during the first few years there was a difficulty in his language development which at times discouraged me and sometimes would bring me to tears, yet his personality was always shining! It wasn't until 2 months ago that he began to have long, intelligent, curious conversations. You should see him giving me advice about how to do things. He is a great strategy thinker and has the ability to relate very easily to the world. I am so jealous! When I was his age, I would cling to my mother for dear life anywhere we went, I was so dependent on her protection. Isaiah however is so unafraid of the world and is ready to learn and venture. I have a distinct pleasure in saying that I am his Ummah (mother).

Salwar Kameez is the traditional garment of choice in the Middle and Far East. The outfit consists of a long shirt or kurta and a baggy pant or salwar. Most women of a cultured or religious background find that this garment is the most adaptable of all since women of all sizes can wear and be flattered by it's graceful tailoring and colorful embroidery.

The outfit can be made in most styles including the salwar made with a bootcut, capri, cropped, traditional salwar or churidar (tight leggins). The kameez can be hip length or as long as ankle length depending on personal and religious preference. The dupatta or stole is a long flowing scarf which can be wrapped in the traditional hijab with accompanying niqab if necessary or just thrown over the hair in the punjabi style. There are thousands of ways the outfit can be made and I find it to be the most versatile, from sexy to professional and all conveys respect, class and immense sophistication. Any woman can feel transformed by wearing this garment.

I began wearing salwar kameez about 4 to 5 years ago and found that it is very hard to find suppliers and stores to buy from, however the internet has once again proven to be valuable in that respect. So below find links to some great sites, and really good prices. Some of these sites provide other garments like the gorgeous saree, which I absolutely desire to wear, the abaya (long muslim prayer dress), punjabi slippers (the real deal brocaded ones, not the cheap plastic slippers at the beauty stores!)jewelry, hijabs, niqabs, hijab pins, and all sorts of beautiful doo dads. Please enjoy and do email me if you have any questions about wearing a saree as I finally learned how to drape them!

www.salwar.com
www.indiagarments.com
www.dollsofindia.com
www.alhannah.com
www.indiaplaza.com
www.eshakti.com
www.homeindia.com
www.ekriti.com
www.princessindia.com
www.zariboutique.com
www.cbazaar.com

It is most proper to give a good background story of myself, not just to fulfill a hungry mind but to fill a bit of this space. There is a desire for me to fluff quite often and I do apologize in advance. In terms of academics, I do excel, but not without much stamina and endurance. It's often difficult for me to complete most things not because they are complicated but because they require a good deal of consistency and dedication, two things which are infantile in my development. This past year presents a number of doo doo stains; firstly I had to adjust my employment schedule from 40 hour weeks to 24 hour weekends which includes Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 4 pm to 12 midnight. Secondly, I had to accept responsibility for receiving my young son from the bus and care for him (normally he went to a daycare and I had little to no contact with his academics). These were two new things for me and in addition to such, I also had to adjust to attending school from Monday to Friday 8 am to 2:30 pm (for the first six months). The education was in the vein of Surgical Technology, a field which requires one to be reasonably fluent in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ethics and judgement, and lest not forget the growing popularity of beaurocracy, but this subject was coined 'Professional Conduct'.

A Surgical Technologist is responsible for a variety of things such as preparing operating rooms with the appropriate equipment and instrumentation needed for the procedure, cleaning oneself so they are 'surgically clean', and donning oneself with the medical burka and hijab. There is also the duty of passing over requested instruments, retracting skin or doing little doo dads here and there in the patient. The things which matters most is to ensure that you are aware of any breaks in aseptic technique and this demands one to be a medical investigator. It really is not as daunting as it sounds and in fact is quite repetitive, so much to the point that one would say a monkey could do the job. Still, the initiation is quite stiff and one must prove that they are flexible, resilient and strangely enough, anti-social to a degree.

Overall I do admit that I had to weigh my thoughts about this profession since surgery is mostly a 'barberic' tradition which started several hundred years ago with average barbers visiting clients, cutting hair, removing moles, tumors from the breasts and foreign objects from the body. Surgery was seen as a trend which provided nothing more than comic relief to physicians. In that age, physicians were not to be bothered with such things and worried themselves mostly with research and theoretical medicine. It wasn't until barber(ism) started to become popular and gain monetary attention that physicians began to take a serious eye to the profession. Once this happened the local authorities started to make regulations stating that barbers be referred to as 'Surgeons of the Short Robe' and physicians as 'Surgeons of the Long Robe', and soon after barbers began to be cut of out the role of the surgeon. With this basic foundation one can foretell a future of lies, sickness, misery, wealth and technology. Surgery is my professional domain.

My prepartion for this field was not only difficult since it made me more aware of my weaknesses an awareness that didn't allow me to pretend they didn't exist. I began to grow more secure in knowing that I had faults, and it wasn't as tough as I thought it would be. I actually am happy knowing I'm not perfect, in fact I am proud to admit I am one imperfect being searching the universe for something that feels right. You're thinking 'what does this have to do with being a surgical technologist'? It has so much do with it that it is frightening. I mean, you have to think about it, you are working with people's lives in your hands. It's not just a phrase to be said, it is a reality to be felt and expressed. It is mostly an emotional experience caring for patients and one should be honest and truthful with themselves regarding their own views.

I suppose this post is a bit vague and general, however it gives a good inside view in my messy mind. A mind which is like a cluttered closet. Welcome to the confetti column.

Welcome to my little blogger world.
